- Fitness is the quantitative representation of natural and sexual selection in evolutionary biology. It can be defined either with regard to genotype or phenotype in a specific environment. In either case, it describes individual reproductive success and equals the average contribution to the next-generation gene pool made by individuals of a particular genotype or phenotype. Genetic fitness is manifested by the phenotype, which is also influenced by the developmental environment. 
The fitness of a particular phenotype can also be different in different selective environments.


Fitness is a state of health and well-being, and more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sport, occupations and daily activities. Fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate and strong physical exercises, and adequate rest.


Before the Industrial Revolution, physical fitness was defined as the ability to perform today's activities without undue fatigue. However, with automation and lifestyle changes, physical fitness is a measure of the body's ability to work efficiently and effectively at work and leisure activities, to be healthy, resist low-motion diseases, and meet emergencies.
